Patti Pocket Skirt

Skirt Pattern: Patti Pocket Skirt    Fabric: Joann Fabrics

Call it chance, call it fate (or the Instagram algorithm), but as I was scrolling through Instagram a couple of weeks ago, I saw Amy asking for testers for her first pattern, the Patti Pocket Skirt.
This is my first time testing a pattern for a company. The Patti Pocket Skirt features deep pockets that pop out and pleats. The skirt has two lengths above the knee and midi length. These patterns are designed for the petite height in mind.

The instructions were clear and user friendly, which is a norm for indie sewing patterns. I had just made a skirt using a New Look pattern before sewing up the Patti Skirt, and the Big Four Sewing Pattern's instructions are not their strength. This made me appreciate the instructions for the Patti Pocket Skirt even more.  What makes these instructions different was it cuts time ironing seams and is more efficient at constructing the skirt due to the order of the instructions.

I shortened the midi pattern by three inches. I wanted a just below the knee length skirt and the lengthen and shorten lines in the pattern made adjusting the length easy. The skirt has a hem facing which made hemming more enjoyable.

One more thing to say about the instructions is that the instructions on your digital device are interactive. From the table of contents, you are able to go to what part of the pattern instructions you are looking for instead of scrolling. I haven't seen this feature in other PDF pattern instructions. I chose to print the copy shop version at the UPS store and the copy shop version has layers just like the printing at home version does (Tip: bring your sewing tape ruler to measure the test square to make sure the pattern was printed at 100%.). There are also links to videos for extra help if needed.

I am not a pleat expert, but I was really pleased to see that the pleats were towards the end of sewing up the pattern. It's sometimes nice to leave the "hard" part until the end. I did have to use my seam ripper and adjust my pleats because I did not line them up correctly the first time I sewed the pleats on the back skirt. I did the front correctly, though! I am really happy with how my pleats turned out. Don't be afraid of pleats if you are not used to sewing them in.

I was finally going to pick a solid fabric (I gravitate towards prints and texture), but in the end I caved and chose a printed fabric. I really liked the embroidery on this fabric, although it was hard to tell what was the right side of the fabric. I chose a linen-like fabric made of rayon and linen.  The pattern feels like the type of style one might find at Anthropologie.

Since the holidays are approaching, this skirt would be great for a holiday type fabric. It also works well in a non-holiday fabric like the one I chose. Although I prefer sewing dresses over skirts, I look forward to sewing up another Patti Pocket Skirt.
